Dr Leo Henryk Sternbach (May 7, 1908 – September 28, 2005) was born&raised in Opatija where his father had pharmacy. Sternbach is credited with the discovery of chlordiazepoxide (Librium), diazepam (Valium), flurazepam (Dalmane), nitrazepam (Mogadon), clonazepam (Klonopin), and trimethaphan (Arfonad). Leo Sternbach also discovered the first commercially feasible synthesis of the vitamin biotin, the synthesis of the antispasmodics Quarzan and Librax (Librium + clidinium bromide) used to treat peptic ulcers as well as the benzodiazepines Dalmane and Klonopin (1976). He holds 241 patents, and was inducted National Inventors Hall of Fame (USA) in 2003.
